Constitution Act 1986

Miscellaneous provisions

29: Transitional and consequential provisions relating to Parliament

Illustration for Constitution Act 1986

When this Act starts, the Parliament that is already in place will keep going under the rules of this Act. You will notice that the Parliament used to be called the General Assembly, but now it will be known as the Parliament of New Zealand. If you read old laws or documents, you should replace the words "General Assembly" with "Parliament of New Zealand", unless it doesn't make sense to do so.

The old name "General Assembly" will be changed to "Parliament of New Zealand" in laws and documents that were created before this Act started, except in one case. This change does not apply to the Acts Interpretation Act 1924.

You should be aware that this change affects how you understand old laws and documents, and you should read them with the new name in mind, unless it is the Acts Interpretation Act 1924.
