Illustration for Governor-General Act 2010

The Governor-General gets a salary that is decided by the Remuneration Authority from time to time. You can think of the Remuneration Authority like a group that helps decide how much money important people in New Zealand should get paid. The salary starts on the earlier of two dates: when the Governor-General agrees to start with the Prime Minister, or when they actually start doing the job. The salary keeps being paid until the Governor-General is no longer in that role. The salary cannot be reduced while the Governor-General is in office. A determination about the salary is considered secondary legislation, which means it has to follow certain rules, as outlined in Part 3 of the Legislation Act 2019. This determination has rules about when it comes into force, which can be before, on, or after the date it is made.
