Illustration for Governor-General Act 2010

The Governor-General gets an allowance to help with official expenses. You can think of an allowance as money given to help with certain costs. The amount of this allowance is decided by an Order in Council. The allowance is paid from the time the Governor-General starts their job, which can be when they agree to take the job or when they actually start working. It keeps being paid until they are no longer the Governor-General. An Order in Council is a kind of rule made by the government, and it can start being enforced on a date that is before, on, or after the date it is made. You can learn more about Orders in Council and how they are published by looking at Part 3 of the Legislation Act 2019.
