Illustration for Ombudsmen Act 1975

The Ombudsmen get paid from public money. You know public money is the money the government has to spend. The Remuneration Authority decides how much they get paid. They also get allowances, which are like extra payments to help them do their job.

The Chief Ombudsman might get paid more than the other Ombudsmen. Once an Ombudsman's salary is set, it cannot be reduced while they are still in the job.

When Ombudsmen travel for work, they get travelling allowances and expenses, which are paid according to the Fees and Travelling Allowances Act 1951. This means they follow the same rules as people on statutory boards when they travel for work.
