Illustration for Disputes Tribunal Act 1988

The Principal Disputes Referee has many jobs. You can think of them as the boss of the Referees. They make sure Referees do their jobs in an orderly and efficient manner. They also oversee the selection process for Referees and make sure they are doing their jobs well. The Principal Disputes Referee gives legal advice to Referees to help them make consistent decisions. They advise the Chief District Court Judge on training and rostering for Referees. They can also sit as a Referee and make decisions like other Referees. The Principal Disputes Referee has the power to do what is necessary to perform their functions, including issuing practice notes for the guidance of other Referees and parties, as long as they are not inconsistent with the Act or any regulations, and carrying out functions conferred by rules made under section 60.
