The purposes of this Act are to increase progressively the availability to the public of official information held by local authorities. This is so you can participate more effectively in the actions and decisions of local authorities. You can also see how local authority members and officials are accountable for their actions.

This Act also aims to provide you with proper access to official information relating to you. It protects official information and the deliberations of local authorities to the extent consistent with the public interest and the preservation of personal privacy.

The Act has other purposes, including to provide for the issue of land information memoranda, as outlined in section 4 of the Local Government Official Information and Meetings Act 1987, which was amended by the Local Government Official Information and Meetings Amendment Act 2015 and the Local Government Official Information and Meetings Amendment Act 2023.
