Children’s Commissioner

Illustration for Children’s Commissioner Act 2022

The Children's Commissioner is a special role that is set up by law. You can think of the Commissioner as a single person who is also a separate organisation, known as a corporation sole. The Commissioner is also a Crown entity, which means it is an organisation that works for the government, and it must follow the rules set out in the Crown Entities Act 2004.

The Commissioner has to follow the rules in the Crown Entities Act 2004, except when this Act says something different. This means the Commissioner has its own set of rules to follow, but it also has to work within the bigger framework of government organisations. The Commissioner is like the board that makes decisions for the organisation, and it has to work in a way that is fair and responsible.
