The Commissioner has duties to perform. You can think of duties as jobs they must do. The Commissioner's jobs include building relationships with groups that help children and young people. They must focus on what is best for Māori children and young people. The Commissioner must also set priorities to help Māori children and young people. They have to think about what the Children's Convention says, as required by section 5(a). The Commissioner's duties are in addition to other jobs they have to do, as outlined in sections 49 to 52 of the Crown Entities Act 2004. The Commissioner owes these duties to the Minister, for the purposes of section 58 of the Crown Entities Act 2004. You can find more information about these duties and how they apply. The Commissioner must work hard to help children and young people in New Zealand.
