When a new Children's Commissioner is needed, the chief executive of the Ministry must set up a nominations panel. You will see this panel assess candidates for the role and make a recommendation to the Minister. The panel will look at people who want to be the Children's Commissioner or who have already been in the role for six years or more and are up for reappointment.

The nominations panel can only recommend someone who has been endorsed by a relevant agency, as specified in regulations made under section 37(1)(a). This agency will have a say in who is suitable for the role.

The nominations panel must have people with different areas of expertise, including Māori leadership, working with children and young people, governance, and appointment and recruitment.
