This page is about a bill. That means that it's not the law yet, but some people want it to be the law. It could change quickly, and some of the information is just a draft.

Regulatory Standards Bill

Principles of responsible regulation and regulatory stewardship - Regulatory stewardship and plans for regularly reviewing legislation - Regulatory stewardship

15: Responsibility to engage in regulatory stewardship

You could also call this:

"Government bosses must look after the rules they're in charge of"

This part of the bill talks about who is responsible for taking care of laws and rules. It says that the head of a government agency should actively look after the rules they're in charge of. They should also make sure their agency does the same.

This rule would only apply to heads of public service agencies. It wouldn't apply to other types of government agencies.

The head of the agency would only answer to the Public Service Commissioner about this job. This means they wouldn't have to explain their actions to anyone else.

The bill also mentions that this new rule wouldn't replace existing rules about taking care of laws. It would work alongside them.
