This page is about a bill. That means that it's not the law yet, but some people want it to be the law. It could change quickly, and some of the information is just a draft.
Referendums Framework Bill
Provisions relating to referendum - General provisions
10: Application of 1993 Act
You could also call this:
"Using the 1993 election rules for referendums with some changes"
If a referendum is held, the rules from the 1993 Act will apply to it, as if it were a general election. You will need to consider the rules from the 1993 Act and any regulations made under it, but only if they are relevant and make sense for a referendum. The rules from the 1993 Act will be used with any necessary changes, unless this Act or its regulations say something different.
The 1993 Act's rules must follow the provisions of this proposed Act and any regulations made under it. This means that if there is a conflict between the two, the provisions of this proposed Act will take priority. You should consider both sets of rules when thinking about how a referendum would work.
This proposed Act is suggesting that the 1993 Act's rules should be used for referendums, with some possible modifications. You can think of it like using a set of rules that already exist, but making some adjustments so they fit the specific situation of a referendum.

Part 2Provisions relating to referendum General provisions
10Application of 1993 Act
The provisions of the 1993 Act and of any regulations made under that Act apply, as far as they are relevant and with any necessary modifications, to a referendum as if it were the poll held for a general election, unless the provision is excluded or modified, expressly or impliedly, by a provision in, or made under, this Act.
Subsection (1) is subject to the provisions of this Act and of any regulations made under it.
