This page is about a bill. That means that it's not the law yet, but some people want it to be the law. It could change quickly, and some of the information is just a draft.

Illustration for Referendums Framework Bill

The Governor-General can make rules for some things. You might wonder what kind of things - they can decide what is or is not an advertisement for a referendum. They can also create forms that people need to fill out for a referendum. The Governor-General can make rules for things that this proposed law says need to be sorted out by rules. They can make rules for other things that are necessary to make this proposed law work properly.

The Governor-General can make these rules at any time before a special period starts. When they make these rules, they are making what is called secondary legislation - if you want to know more about what that means, you can look at Part 3 of the Legislation Act 2019 for information about how these rules are published.

These rules can cover a range of things, like what activities are allowed during a referendum, and what forms people need to use. The Governor-General has the power to make these rules to help make sure the proposed law works as intended.
