Referendums Framework Bill

Provisions relating to referendum - Counting of votes and declaration of votes

25: Determination of results by Electoral Commission

You could also call this:

"The Electoral Commission works out the referendum results from the votes counted by returning officers."

Illustration for Referendums Framework Bill

The Electoral Commission has to work out some things from the count results that each returning officer gives them. They have to find out the total number of valid votes for each option for each question in the referendum, and the total number of informal votes for each option for each question. You can think of valid votes as the ones that are filled out correctly, and informal votes as the ones that are not. The Electoral Commission has to do this as soon as they can after they get all the count results from the returning officers. They get the results from each returning officer, and then they use those to make their decision. The Electoral Commission must finish this task quickly, so they can tell you the results of the referendum.
