When you go to vote in a general election where a referendum is happening, the person giving you your ballot paper must also give you a referendum voting paper. You are getting this paper because you are qualified to vote in the general election. The person giving you the papers must do this at the same time.

If you need to show who you are to get your ballot paper, you only need to do this once to get both your ballot paper and your referendum voting paper. This is because the rules about showing who you are, which are in section 167 of the 1993 Act, do not apply twice. You can get both papers at the same time.

Some rules in the 1993 Act, specifically section 167(3)(b) and (c), do not apply to referendum voting papers. These rules do not matter when you are getting your referendum voting paper. You can just get your paper and vote.
