You can ask to look at an item that is being held because of a notice given under section 136(1), an investigation under section 137, or proceedings under section 141. The chief executive or a Customs officer must let you inspect the item if you have an interest in it. You can look at the item during normal office hours. You can also remove the item to inspect it, but you need approval from the chief executive or a Customs officer. They will tell you where, when, and how you can inspect it. You must give the chief executive or Customs officer at least 72 hours' notice before you inspect the item. This is so they can get ready for your visit.

143Inspection of item

  1. The chief executive or a Customs officer shall, in respect of any item in his or her possession that is or may be the subject of—

  2. a notice given under section 136(1); or
    1. an investigation under section 137; or
      1. proceedings under section 141,—
        1. allow any person claiming to have an interest in—
        2. the item; or
          1. any investigation under section 137, or any proceedings under section 141, in relation to the item—
            1. to inspect that item.

            2. A person referred to in subsection (1) may—

            3. inspect the item during normal office hours; or
              1. with the approval of the chief executive or a Customs officer, remove the item or an example of the item to such place, for such period, and on such conditions as the chief executive or Customs officer may specify, for the purpose of inspecting it.
                1. Any person who intends to inspect any item under this section shall give the chief executive or Customs officer not less than 72 hours' notice of his or her intention to inspect that item.
