Children’s Act 2014

Strategy for improving children’s well-being and oranga tamariki action plan - Strategy for improving children’s well-being

7C: Annual report: analysis of identified populations

You could also call this:

"A yearly report that looks at how certain groups of kids, like Māori children, are doing to help improve their well-being."

Illustration for Children’s Act 2014

The report about the Strategy for improving children's well-being must include analysis of certain groups of children. You need to know that the identified populations are Māori children and other groups that the responsible Minister chooses. The Minister can choose groups like Pacific children, disabled children, or children with a disabled parent.

The report must look at these groups to help achieve the outcomes that the strategy wants. However, if there is not enough good data, the report does not have to include analysis of these groups. The data must be good enough to use the right statistical methods, or the report does not have to include the analysis, as stated in the report required by section 7B.

This is part of the plan to improve children's well-being in New Zealand, and it is outlined in the Children's Act 2014. You can find more information about the changes to this act in the Children's Amendment Act 2018. The report is an important tool to help make sure all children in New Zealand are doing well.

7CAnnual report: analysis of identified populations

  1. The report required by section 7B must include analysis of the identified populations.

  2. The identified populations are the following children who are living in households in New Zealand:

  3. Māori children; and
    1. any groups identified for the report under subsection (3).
      1. The responsible Minister may identify for the report 1 or more groups of other children, analysis of whom may help achieve outcomes sought by the strategy.

      2. Examples of groups of other children who may be identified are Pacific children, disabled children, and children with a disabled parent, guardian, or caregiver.

      3. However, this section does not require the report to include analysis of the identified populations if, or so far as, available data is not reasonably adequate to enable that analysis to be done using the relevant statistical methodology.
