Building Societies Act 1965

Constitution of building societies - Name of society

22: Society to use registered name

You could also call this:

“Building societies must use their official registered name or face penalties”

You must use the name that your society is registered under. You can’t use any other names or titles. However, if you need to, you can ask the Registrar for permission to use a shorter version of your name for specific reasons.

If your society uses a name that isn’t its registered name without permission, it’s breaking the law. This means the society and any directors involved in using the wrong name could get in trouble. They might have to pay a fine of up to $20. If they keep using the wrong name, they might have to pay another $20 for each day they continue to do so.
