Building Societies Act 1965

Miscellaneous provisions

133: False statements in documents

You could also call this:

“Making untrue statements in important papers is against the law”

If you make a false statement on purpose in certain documents, or if you change these documents to make them false, you are breaking the law. This is called making a false statement in documents.

You could get in trouble if you do this. You might have to go to prison for up to 2 years, or pay a fine of up to $1,000, or both.

This rule applies to two types of documents:

  1. Documents that are sent to the Registrar because of this law.
  2. Statements that building societies give out according to section 34 of this law.

Remember, it’s important to always tell the truth in these documents and not change them to make them false.
