Illustration for Medicines Act 1981

The Minister will appoint a group called the Medicines Classification Committee. You can read about how the Minister appoints people in section 8. This group gives advice to the Minister about medicines. The Committee tells the Minister which medicines should be available only with a prescription, which should be restricted, and which can be bought at a pharmacy. The Minister can also ask the Committee for advice on other matters related to medicines. The Minister must choose at least 7 people for the Committee. The Minister must think the person is suitable before appointing them. The people in the Committee work for 3 years, but they can be reappointed for another 3 years. If someone in the Committee is not doing their job, or does something wrong, the Minister can remove them. For the Committee to make decisions, half of the members plus one must be present. You can find more information about the Committee and its role in the Medicines Act.
