You need to follow rules about prescribing medicines if you are a veterinarian or an authorised prescriber who is not a designated prescriber. These rules can include getting a special qualification or training before you start prescribing medicines. You might also need to show that you know enough to prescribe medicines safely. You may need to keep learning and training to prescribe medicines. This can include regular checks to make sure you are competent to prescribe medicines. In some cases, you might need to work under the supervision of a practitioner. If you do not follow these rules, you might not be allowed to prescribe medicines. The rules can be different for veterinarians and other types of prescribers. The Minister or a professional organisation can decide what training or qualifications you need. A relevant professional organisation is a group that oversees a particular health profession. For veterinarians, this is the Veterinary Council of New Zealand. For other prescribers, it is the authority that oversees their health profession. You can find more information about the rules in section 105(1)(d).
