When the Minister is choosing people to be on the Waste Advisory Board, they must follow some rules. The Minister asks for suggestions for who should be on the Board by putting a notice in the Gazette, in newspapers, and on a website. They give people one month to suggest names.

The Minister can choose someone to be on the Board even if nobody suggested that person. Before making a choice, the Minister talks to the Minister of Māori Affairs. The Minister thinks about what skills and knowledge the Board needs, including knowing about this Act, waste minimisation projects, and local government.

The Minister also considers what the Board will be dealing with and what the community and industry need. They think about tikanga Māori, which is a way of doing things that is important to Māori. After choosing someone for the Board, the Minister tells everyone by putting a notice in the Gazette.
