The purpose of this Act is to encourage you to minimise waste and decrease waste disposal. This is to protect the environment from harm and provide benefits for the environment, society, economy, and culture. You can help achieve this by being mindful of your waste.
The purpose of Part 3 is to impose a levy on waste that is disposed of. This levy will be used to raise revenue to fund things like promoting waste minimisation and reducing environmental harm. You will also be helping to fund activities that increase environmental benefits and repair waste management infrastructure damaged by emergencies.
The levy will also be used to fund the Ministry's work on waste management and minimisation, as well as projects that clean up contaminated sites. By imposing a levy on waste disposal, the cost of disposing of waste will increase. This is because disposing of waste has costs for the environment, society, and the economy. You should be aware that these costs are being recognised through the levy.
You can play a role in minimising waste by making conscious choices about the waste you produce. The Act aims to encourage you to think about the impact of your actions on the environment. By working together, you can help reduce waste disposal and promote a more sustainable future.
The revenue raised from the levy will be used for various purposes, including helping local authorities manage emergency waste and undertake their functions and duties in relation to waste management and minimisation.
