The chairperson of the Board is a special person who helps the Board work properly. You can be the chairperson if you are a High Court Judge, a former High Court Judge, a District Court Judge, or a former District Court Judge. The chairperson's main job is to make sure the Board does its work efficiently and effectively, following the rules of the Parole Act 2002.

The chairperson has other jobs too, like making referrals to the Board for early release under section 25, or for compassionate release under section 41. They can also make interim recall orders under section 62, and allocate people to review decisions under section 67. The chairperson must do anything else they are required to do under this Act or any other law.

The chairperson can also sit in on any panel hearing, and can even be the person in charge of the panel.
