When you read the Remuneration Authority Act 1977, you need to know what some words mean. The word "allowance" refers to a basic expense allowance and an office-holder allowance for a member of the House of Representatives. The "Authority" means the Remuneration Authority established by section 4(1).

You also need to know that the "Minister" means the Minister of Labour. The term "principal allowances" means allowances that are not for travelling or other small things. For some judges, principal allowances can include money for accommodation in Wellington.

The word "remuneration" includes salary, wages, and other payments for services. It also includes benefits and other things you get for working. A "retirement scheme" has the same meaning as in section 6(1) of the Financial Markets Conduct Act 2013.
