Illustration for Defence Act 1990

The Chief of Defence Force can create a joint force with members from two or more Services. You can think of a Service like the Army, Navy, or Air Force. The Chief of Defence Force can choose an officer from one of the Services to be in charge of the joint force. Alternatively, the joint force can be placed under the command of the Chief of any Service. When a joint force is created, the Defence Act and the Armed Forces Discipline Act 1971 apply to its members. However, some things are done differently. If something needs to be done by or to the Chief of the Service you belong to, it can be done by or to the Chief of Defence Force instead. If the Chief of Defence Force has placed the joint force under the command of a Chief of Service, things can be done by or to that Chief of Service. There may be other modifications that are necessary, and these can be prescribed.
