Residential Tenancies Act 1986

The Tenancy Tribunal - Procedure

95: Proceedings usually to be in public

You could also call this:

“Court meetings are usually open for everyone to see, but sometimes they can be private”

The Tribunal usually holds its meetings in public. This means that anyone can come and watch what happens. However, there are some exceptions to this rule.

If the meeting is about someone leaving a tenancy because of family violence or the fear of family violence, the Tribunal must have the whole meeting in private. This means only the people involved in the case can be there.

For other types of meetings, the Tribunal can decide to have all or part of the meeting in private. This can happen if someone asks for it, or if the Tribunal decides it’s a good idea. When making this decision, the Tribunal thinks about what’s best for the people involved and what’s best for the public.

Remember, these rules are part of the law about how the Tribunal works. The Tribunal is a special group that helps solve problems between tenants and landlords.
