You have the right to participate in conservation processes if you are an affected iwi, hapū, or whānau. This means you exercise kaitiakitanga in a part of the common marine and coastal area where a conservation process is happening. You can take part in things like applications to declare or extend a marine reserve under section 5 of the Marine Reserves Act 1971. You can also participate in proposals to define and declare or extend a marine mammal sanctuary under section 22 of the Marine Mammals Protection Act 1978. This includes declaring or extending conservation protected areas and publicly notified applications for concessions. You can take part in applications for permits authorising marine mammal watching under regulation 12 of the Marine Mammals Protection Regulations 1992. As an affected iwi, hapū, or whānau, you have the right to be involved in these conservation processes in the common marine and coastal area. This is part of sections 48 to 50 which explain more about your rights. You can exercise your right to participate in these processes to help protect the area.
