Weights and Measures Act 1987

Stamping, verification, and approval of weights and measures

23: Notification of non-compliance

You could also call this:

“Telling someone their scales or measuring tools don't follow the rules”

If you have a weight, measure, or weighing or measuring instrument that needs to be checked, an accredited person will look at it. If they find that it doesn’t meet the rules set by the law, they won’t stamp it or give it a certificate to say it’s accurate. Instead, they’ll do two things:

First, they’ll give a notice to the person in charge of the item right away. This notice will explain that the item doesn’t meet the requirements. If they can’t give the notice to a person, they’ll attach it to the item itself.

Second, they’ll send a copy of this notice to the Secretary as soon as they can.

The notice will be in a special form that the law says they must use. It will include enough information to identify the item, like its serial number. It will also explain exactly how the item doesn’t meet the rules, including when and where the problem was found.

This process helps make sure that weights and measures used in New Zealand are accurate and follow the rules set by the law.
