Freedom Camping Act 2011

Where freedom camping permitted - Freedom camping on conservation land

18: Public notification of notices restricting or prohibiting freedom camping on conservation land

You could also call this:

“Telling everyone about rules for camping on nature land”

When a notice is made to restrict or prohibit freedom camping on conservation land, it needs to be shared with the public. To do this, a summary of the notice is published in newspapers. This summary is printed in daily newspapers that go to Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch, and Dunedin. If the notice only affects a specific area, it might just be published in local newspapers for that area.

The summary in the newspaper needs to explain what the notice is about. It also has to say when the notice will start to apply. This date can’t be earlier than when the notice is officially published or when the summary appears in the newspaper. The summary also needs to tell people that they can see the full notice at Department of Conservation offices.

If you want to see the full notice, you can ask the Department of Conservation for a copy. They will give you one, but you might have to pay a small fee for it.
