Freedom Camping Act 2011

Enforcement, miscellaneous, and transitional provisions - Enforcement officers

32: Appointment of enforcement officers by local authorities

You could also call this:

“Local councils pick people to make sure freedom camping rules are followed”

A local authority can choose people to be enforcement officers for this Act. These officers will help make sure people follow the rules about freedom camping.

When the local authority picks someone to be an enforcement officer, they must give that person a written warrant. This warrant is like a special permission slip that says what the officer can do. It tells the officer:

  • What they’re responsible for and what powers they have
  • What kinds of rule-breaking they can deal with
  • Where they’re allowed to work in the local area
  • If they can work on conservation land (but only if the Director-General says it’s okay)
  • If they can work on LINZ land (but only if the chief executive or commissioner says it’s okay)

This way, the enforcement officers know exactly what they’re allowed to do and where they can do it.
