Dog Control Act 1996

Menacing dogs

33C: Dogs belonging to breed or type listed in Schedule 4 to be classified as menacing

You could also call this:

"Dogs of certain breeds might be called menacing and have special rules."

If you own a dog that belongs to a breed or type listed in Schedule 4, the territorial authority might classify it as menacing. They must have reasonable grounds to believe your dog is one of these breeds. The territorial authority will use this classification for the purposes of section 33E(1)(a).

If your dog is classified as menacing, the territorial authority will give you written notice about the classification, the rules that apply to menacing dogs under section 33E, and your right to object to the classification under section 33D.

You will get this notice in a prescribed form, which tells you what the classification means and what you can do about it.
