The Director-General of Health must appoint a Director of Addiction Services under the Public Service Act 2020. You can think of the Director as the person in charge of making sure this law is followed. The Director is responsible for the general administration of this law under the direction of the Minister and the Director-General of Health.

The Director has some important jobs to do, like visiting treatment centres to check they are working well. The Director can visit a treatment centre at any time without warning, and they must be allowed to go anywhere in the centre and see any patient.

When the Director visits a treatment centre, some special rules apply, which are explained in Section 99(2) and (3). These rules help the Director do their job properly.
