The Governor-General can make regulations for different purposes. You might see regulations about the form of an application for a change of name under section 35 or registration under section 52(1)(a). The Governor-General can also make regulations about prescribing reasons for refusal by the Registrar under section 55(2) or prescribing any further information that must be entered on the register of limited partnerships, as seen in section 57(1)(i) or the register of overseas limited partnerships.

The Governor-General can regulate the search of the registers, as mentioned in section 64(1), and prescribe any further search criteria under section 64(2)(i). You will also see regulations about prescribing fees to be paid under this Act or regulations made under this Act. The Governor-General can prescribe the form for notice to the Registrar of a change of registered office, a change of address for service, or a change of details in the register.

The Governor-General can make regulations about other matters, such as prescribing a country, State, or territory outside New Zealand as an enforcement country for the purposes of section 8(4), or prescribing countries, States, or territories outside New Zealand for the purposes of section 19A(2)(g) or section 19A(2)(h). When the Governor-General makes regulations, they are secondary legislation, which you can learn more about in Part 3 of the Legislation Act 2019.
