Illustration for Local Government (Rating) Act 2002

A local authority can set a special rate for the water it supplies, based on how much water you use. This rate is worked out according to the authority's funding impact statement. You can be charged a fixed amount for each unit of water, or you can be charged according to a scale of charges. A local authority is like a council, and it provides services to your community. When the law talks about a local authority, it does not include the Auckland Council, which is a special council in Auckland, established by section 6(1) of the Local Government (Auckland Council) Act 2009.
