If you have extra money left over after paying your rates, it gets used in a certain order. You use it to pay any rates you still owe for the current year, then you use it to pay any other rates you owe for your property. If there is still money left, it gets put towards your future rates. If you have money put towards your future rates, you can ask the local authority to give you some or all of it back at any time. You do this by writing to them and they will give you the money back as soon as they can after they get your request.
