"Helping the Public Service Work Better for the Community"
This Act has several purposes. You will see that it aims to keep the public service running and make it more modern. It also wants to make sure the public service follows certain rules that are not written down, but are still important.
The Act wants to explain what the public service is working towards and what is important to the people who work in it. This includes things like the principles and values that guide their work. You can think of principles and values like a set of rules that help people make good decisions.
The Act also wants to help the public service work better together to get good results for the community. It does this by setting up different ways that public service agencies can work together. Additionally, some of the rules in this Act will also apply to other parts of the government, not just the public service.
The Act reminds us that the public service is all about serving the community. You can read more about how this Act is similar to an earlier law, the 1988 No 20 s 1A, if you want to learn more about the history of this law.
The Parliamentary Counsel Office has made editorial and format changes to this version using the powers under subpart 2 of Part 3 of the Legislation Act 2019.
