Public Service Act 2020

Public service agencies and joint operational agreements - Public service agencies - Interdepartmental ventures

33: Establishment and reorganisations of interdepartmental ventures

You could also call this:

"The Governor-General can start, change or stop projects that involve multiple government departments working together."

The Governor-General can make changes to interdepartmental ventures by Order in Council. You can think of an interdepartmental venture as a project that involves several government departments working together. If a new venture is established, or an existing one is changed or stopped, the Governor-General can update the list of ventures in Part 4 of Schedule 2.

When a new venture is set up, the order must include the name of the venture and the departments that will be involved. These departments are called the relevant departments. The order must also list the departments that have responsibilities related to the services or functions of the venture.

In this context, departments include not just government ministries, but also the New Zealand Police and the New Zealand Defence Force. If the Governor-General makes an order under this section, it is considered secondary legislation, which has its own publication requirements, as outlined in Part 3 of the Legislation Act 2019.
