Illustration for Coroners Act 2006

A special group called the suicide and media expert panel is set up. You need to know the Director-General of Health chooses up to 4 people to be on this panel. The Director-General of Health must pick people with the right skills, including someone who knows about stopping suicides, someone who knows about media, someone who knows about tikanga Māori, and someone who knows about Māori youth suicides. The panel gives advice to the chief coroner if they ask for it, about certain applications made under section 71A(1). These applications are about allowing some information to be published about self-inflicted deaths. The chief coroner can ask the whole panel or just one member for advice. The panel has an important job in helping the chief coroner make decisions. You can find more information about how the law works in the Coroners Amendment Act 2016. The law is in place to help people in New Zealand.
