Illustration for Coroners Act 2006

The chief coroner has to choose coroners to deal with certain types of deaths. You will know which coroner to report a death to because the chief coroner tells them and the New Zealand Police in writing. The chief coroner makes this decision under section 15(2)(a). The chief coroner can choose coroners for deaths that happen in a certain area, or deaths that are reported within a certain time. They can also choose coroners for other types of deaths that fit into a certain group. The chief coroner can change their mind at any time and amend, revoke, or replace their decision. The chief coroner can make these changes in the same way they made the original decision, by telling the coroners and the New Zealand Police in writing. This helps make sure the right coroner is dealing with the right types of deaths. You can find more information about how the coroner system works in the Coroners Act 2006.
