Trade Marks Act 2002

Administrative provisions and miscellaneous - Commissioner and Assistant Commissioners of Trade Marks

175A: Functions of Commissioner

You could also call this:

"The Commissioner's job is to manage trade marks in New Zealand"

The Commissioner has several important jobs under this law. You need to know that the Commissioner:

Looks at requests for new trade marks and decides if they can be registered. They also consider changes to existing trade marks, like updating them or cancelling them.

Gives advice to people who are thinking about applying for a trade mark. This advice helps people understand if their idea for a trade mark might work.

Creates and changes a group of advisors called the advisory committee. The Commissioner also helps this committee with their work.

Keeps a list of all the registered trade marks and takes care of this list to make sure it's correct and up to date.

Does other tasks that this law and its rules say the Commissioner should do.

All of these jobs help make sure that trade marks in New Zealand are managed fairly and properly.
