The purposes of the Smokefree Environments and Regulated Products Act 1990 are to help you and others. You are protected from harm caused by smoking and vaping. The law aims to reduce the appeal of smoking and vaping to children and young people.

The law also regulates the marketing and advertising of smoking and vaping products to discourage you from taking them up. It encourages people to stop smoking and vaping, and helps those who have stopped from starting again. The law supports smokers who want to switch to less harmful products.

The law regulates the safety of smoking and vaping products and monitors their ingredients and emissions. It also helps New Zealand meet its obligations under the WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control. You can find more information about the amendments to the law in the Smokefree Environments and Regulated Products Amendment Act 2024 and the Smokefree Environments and Regulated Products Amendment Act (No 2) 2024.
