Fair Trading Act 1986

Miscellaneous provisions

47J: Offence to contravene section 47G

You could also call this:

“Breaking rules about giving information can get you in trouble”

You can get in trouble if you don’t follow the rules in section 47G. There are two main things you’re not allowed to do:

First, you can’t ignore or refuse to do what a notice under section 47G tells you to do, unless you have a good reason.

Second, if you give information or documents because of the notice, you can’t give false or misleading information on purpose.

If you break these rules, you’ve committed an offence. If you’re found guilty, you might have to pay a fine. If you’re an individual person, the fine could be up to $10,000. If you’re a company or organisation, the fine could be up to $30,000.
