95: Considering and determining application for territorial authority consent

“How councils decide if a new betting shop can open”

When a TAB wants to open a new venue, they need to ask the local council for permission. This is called a territorial authority consent. Here’s how the council deals with these requests:

The council must look at the application based on their TAB venue policy. This policy sets out the rules for TAB venues in their area. After looking at the application, the council can either say yes or no to the new TAB venue.

The council needs to tell TAB NZ and the government’s chief executive what they decided within 30 working days. This countdown starts from either when they got the application or when they made their TAB venue policy, whichever happened last.

It’s important to know that the council can’t even think about an application if they don’t have a TAB venue policy yet. They need to make this policy first before they can start looking at any requests for new TAB venues.
