If you are a manager of a prison, you can ask for a prisoner to be assessed to see if they have an intellectual disability. You can only do this if you have good reasons to think the prisoner might have an intellectual disability. A Director of Area Mental Health Services under the Mental Health (Compulsory Assessment and Treatment) Act 1992 can also ask for a former special patient to be assessed if they think the patient has an intellectual disability. You can ask a staff member to make the application for you if you are a prison manager.
