Illustration for Intellectual Disability (Compulsory Care and Rehabilitation) Act 2003

If you are a care recipient who needs supervised care, a co-ordinator can tell you to stay in a certain place or facility. This direction is given to you and your care manager in writing. You will know it is in effect when you get this written notice.

You might be told to stay in a secure facility, but only if it is an emergency or if it is part of your care and rehabilitation plan. The plan says what kind of care you need to get better.

If you are given a direction to stay in a facility, you must stay there while the direction is in effect. If you need to leave the facility, you will need to get permission under this Act.
