Legislation Act 2019

Interpretation and application of legislation - Power to incorporate by reference

63: Interpretation

You could also call this:

"Understanding what words mean in the law"

When you read sections 64 to 66 and Schedule 2, you need to understand what some words mean. The word material refers to things mentioned in section 64(1), but it does not include things that are incorporated by reference in that material. You will see this explained in more detail in those sections.

The term written material means things that show words, numbers, or symbols in a way that you can see and touch, or in a way that you can store and read using electronic means. This can be in any medium, like paper or a computer screen, as long as you can retrieve and read the information. You can find more information about this in section 64(1) and Schedule 2.

When you are looking at these sections, make sure you understand what material and written material mean, so you can follow what is being said.
