Legislation Act 2019

Drafting and publishing of legislation - Drafting and publishing legislation - Key publishing responsibilities

70: PCO must publish consolidations of legislation that is amended

You could also call this:

"The government must publish updated laws when they are changed, so you can see the new rules."

The PCO has to publish updated versions of laws that have been changed. You can think of these updated versions as a new copy of the law that includes all the changes made to it. The PCO must do this for all Acts that are amended and for secondary legislation they have drafted that is amended.

When the PCO publishes an updated version of a law, it must show what the law is at a specific date, including all the changes made to it. This updated version is called a consolidation and it helps you see what the law is now. The consolidation must clearly show what the law is.

The PCO can also publish a version of the law that shows what it will be in the future, if some changes have not yet started. However, they must clearly indicate which changes have not yet started. You can compare this to a previous law, such as s 6(5) of the 2012 No 119 act, to see how the law has changed.
