You can have one or more selection committees. The Secretary sets them up to assess applications for legal aid services and advise on suitability. They look at who should provide these services. The Secretary chooses the committee members. They must pick a Ministry representative as the chairperson and a lawyer. 78Selection committees

  1. The Secretary may establish 1 or more selection committees to—

  2. assess applications for approval to provide legal aid services or specified legal services; and
    1. advise the Secretary of the suitability of those applicants.
      1. The Secretary—

      2. must appoint a representative from the Ministry as chairperson of the committee; and
        1. must appoint to the committee a lawyer—
          1. from a group of lawyers nominated by the New Zealand Law Society as being suitable for appointment to the committee; and
            1. who the Secretary is satisfied is suitable for appointment and has expertise in the areas of law relevant to the committee's work; and
            2. may appoint any other suitably qualified people to the committee whom the Secretary thinks fit.
