The main goal of this law is to keep you and other members of the public safe from very harmful crimes, like serious sexual or violent offences. This law aims to protect people from getting hurt by these crimes. The law is trying to prevent harm from happening to you and others.
This law is not trying to punish people who have done something wrong. If someone has an order made against them under this law, the goal is not to punish them.
The focus is on keeping you and the community safe, rather than punishing individuals who have committed certain crimes.
The Parliamentary Counsel Office has made editorial and format changes to this version using the powers under subpart 2 of Part 3 of the Legislation Act 2019.
