Illustration for Human Rights Act 1993

It is against the law to treat someone badly at work because they are affected by family violence. You are affected by family violence if someone is being violent to you or to a child you live with. The law says you should not be treated unfairly because of this. If you are looking for a job or already have one, you should not be treated badly because of family violence. This includes being dismissed, not getting the same pay or opportunities as others, or being forced to retire. The Family Violence Act 2018 defines what family violence is, you can read about it in section 9 of that Act. It does not matter when the family violence happened, you are still protected by the law. You can learn more about what a person affected by family violence means in the Family Violence Act 2018, and what a child is, as defined in section 8 of that Act.
